横溝正史の推理小説です。
名探偵 金田一耕助は人捜しを依頼され、岡山県のとある島に向かいますが、捜していた男は謎の死を遂げたという事がわかりました。依頼人は、男の死の真相究明を金田一耕助に頼みます。金田一耕助は島に行き人々の話を聞いていく中で、島では過去２０年間で３名の行方不明者がいるらしい事がわかってきました。
戦後のドサクサによって「蒸発」という言葉がよく使用されるようになったようですが、これは誘拐や殺人をうやむやにする事のできる言葉です。
